Adult Tobacco Free Program

Adult Tobacco Free Program

Working toward a tobacco-free Hispanic community in Allen County is the main goal of the Adult Tobacco Free Program. The program is implemented by the Adult Tobacco Free Specialist and the HATF (Hispanic Advisory Tobacco Free) Coalition.

The coalition is made up of individuals and organizations from the community who represent business, health care, faith based, educational, and other fields. Together, the members work to plan and implement programs, activities, and events aimed to educate Hispanics and reduce tobacco use in the community. The HATF Coalition meets quarterly at United Hispanic Americans. At these meetings, the coalition members brainstorm ideas, work out details, and evaluate events and activities. Members are also responsible for recruiting new members, executing various projects, and participating in anti-tobacco events throughout the county.

Tobacco free events always bring in large crowds of Hispanics to listen to music, enjoy games, and more!Events can be large or small and past events have included a Healthy Mom’s Baby Shower, a June Blitz targeting young adult Hispanic men, and a Cinco de Mayo Family Fiesta. In addition, small activities are also being done in the community, including sharing information the Lafayette Medical Center Prevention Clinic and conducting tobacco education presentations at agencies such as the YWCA.

The tobacco program of United Hispanic Americans is funded through a muli-year grant awarded by ITPC (Indiana Tobacco Prevention and Cessation).
