HISTORY

Hispanic young adults participate in the organization's early activities. The late 60’s were trying times for Hispanics in the Midwest. This population, although growing, was seen as a minority and their voices were left unheard. All this changed in 1970, when a small group of Hispanic visionaries had a dream to address the concerns and injustices of the Hispanic community and organized United Mexican Americans, Inc.

During the next two decades, the Hispanic community grew and other ethnicities and cultures became more prevalent. The organization recognized this change and altered its name to United Hispanic Americans, Inc.

Throughout the years, the organization and the community have gone through many significant changes, specifically the increasing number of new immigrants to the country. Because of this change, United Hispanic Americans has responded by increasing its programs and services to the community and schools in an effort to fulfill the needs of Hispanics in Fort Wayne.

Because it is unique and unlike any other organization in Northeast Indiana, United Hispanic Americans is the first place that Hispanics go, no matter the issue. People go to United Hispanic Americans to get help with their problems, to offer their services, and to find out how to become involved. The organization is networked with many Hispanic and bilingual businesses and individuals within the community and the coalition stemmed from this network.
